Because life is better by the sea

Daaaa-dum. Daaaaa-dum. You guys know what theme song that is, right? Hint: Shark Week is just around the corner. And regardless of what’s under the waves, there’s a reason why so many vacations have a waterfront view. From the sound of the surf to the salty air, coastal escapes have a way of making it easy to slow down and enjoy the moment.

If you’re an ocean lover, these destinations are sure to make a splash on your travel list!

  • Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Where the ocean meets the movies!

Martha’s Vineyard has long been a favorite for ocean lovers. And Shark Week gives fans one more reason to visit! One of our favorite coastal escapes, Martha’s Vineyard served as the filming location for the 1975 blockbuster Jaws. Today, you can visit iconic spots from the movie, like the famous “Jaws Bridge.” You can even take a guided tour that brings the movie to life (hopefully, not completely to life!).

Beyond its Hollywood history, the island offers anything ocean lovers could want. Spend the day strolling the harbor and watching the sailboats. Bring a good book and stretch out on one of the beautiful beaches. And when hunger strikes, head to one of the island’s waterfront restaurants for a lobster roll or freshly shucked oysters.

  • Monterey, CA

    Waves and wildlife!

SoCal’s coastal towns are known for their beaches. But in Monterey, it’s the incredible marine life that steals the spotlight. Depending on the season, you might spot migrating whales, barking sea lions, or playful otters floating through kelp. For an even closer look, spend an afternoon at the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. Here, sharks, jellyfish, and colorful sea creatures give you a fascinating glimpse beneath the Pacific’s waves.

It’s not just the coastline that appeals to ocean lovers. Popular Cannery Row is a waterfront street lined with boutiques, gift shops, and seafood restaurants. At Old Fisherman’s Wharf, you can watch the fishing boats drifting by while enjoying a sourdough bread bowl filled with clam chowder. Feeling more active? Kayak along the bay, or follow the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail for spectacular waterfront views.

  • Outer Banks, NC

    Room to roam!

The Outer Banks stretches for more than 100 miles along North Carolina’s coast, giving ocean lovers plenty of beaches to explore. Spend the day searching for shells along uncrowded beaches, watching surfers tackle the waves. If you’re feeling inspired, book your own surf lessons with experienced locals and join them! Another OBX must? Visiting Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head to fish, stroll, and visit the community aquarium displays.

The ocean plays a role in almost every Outer Banks activity. The boardwalk in Duck provides a one-mile path on the sound, perfect for an afternoon of shopping, dining, and live music. Or take the scenic ferry out to Ocracoke. Rent a golf cart and explore its pristine beaches, pedestrian-friendly village, and rich pirate history.

  • Tybee Island, GA

    Small island, big coastal charm!

Tybee Island pretty much proves that you don’t need resorts and crowded beaches for unforgettable coastal escapes. This laid-back barrier island is all about slowing down and soaking in both the sunshine and life by the water. Days can be spent lounging on the beach and splashing in the Atlantic. Early risers can head to the Tybee Island Pier for some of the island’s best sunrise views. Prefer your adventures later in the day? A sunset dolphin cruise brings you close to these frolicking locals.

Fresh seafood is another part of the Tybee Island experience. A basket of peel-and-eat Georgia shrimp goes perfectly with an evening beach stroll, you guys. And if you like mixing in a bit of history with your ocean adventures, Tybee is just 20 minutes from Savannah!

Whether you’re surfing, swimming, or strolling the shoreline, these four coastal escapes offer plenty of ways to enjoy the ocean!
